Stephanie Kifowit, a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, called for the death of the family of Peter Breen, a Republican colleague in the House.
She attacked Breen in a debate on a bill to assist the families of people who had become ill or died following an outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease at a state home for veterans. Republicans were concerned about the cost of the plan, which would raise the maximum level of compensation from $100,000 to $2,000,000. Breen argued this would lead to personal injury lawyers making out “like bandits, which they tend to do anytime they come to the General Assembly”.
Kifowit then immediately responded with complete vitriol:
To the representative from Lombard, I would like to make him a broth of Legionella and pump it into the water system of his loved ones so that they can be infected, they can be mistreated, they can sit and suffer by getting aspirin instead of being properly treated and ultimately die.
Video footage of the quote can be seen in a tweet from the Illinois Channel:
Republicans in the House today exploded in anger over the comments of @RepKifowit in which she spoke of Rep Peter Breen's family drinking a stew of Legionella bacteria. Kifowit said she was making a hypothetical comment, not actually wishing harm to Breen's family @ilgop SB-2481 pic.twitter.com/eF6bDOKYIs— IllinoisChannel (@IllinoisChannel) November 27, 2018
Shortly after, Representative Keith Wheeler said the House “should not stand” for her comments:
We lost our way today. I cannot fathom the idea that any one of us would ever publicly make a statement that is effectively a wish for a family member of one of our colleagues to die. That is what was said today. I think that’s despicable.
After the debate, she attempted to backpedal online. In a series of now-deleted tweets, she claimed that she “never stated anything to wish his family death”, and that her words “were twisted and misrepresented”; she was being purely hypothetical, she argued:
Quite clearly what I said was “imagine if it was your family”, so if it was misheard, I’ll apologize for the mishearing, but my words were clearly, “imagine if it was your family”… [my remarks] are all transcribed, and my words will be clear.
Kifowit must have forgotten that the debate was recorded, and was called out for her non-apology by the Illinois Republican Party, who demanded that she resign:
Jeanne Ives, a Republican State Representative, slammed Kifowit for her behaviour:
How dare you. How dare you concoct up some sort of story about brewing up some batch of Legionella and having him feed it to his family. How dare you take the discussion and the debate about a very serious bill that has a huge cost consequence on both sides, both for the victim and the state taxpayers. How dare you take an honest debate about an issue and then wish death on my colleague Peter Breen, his wife and his two adopted kids.
It is no surprise that a leftist legislator is encouraging violence against her Republican counterpart. Breitbart News has recorded over 639 confirmed incidents of left-wing violence against conservatives and Trump supporters going back to 2015.
